I originally considered iPhone programming but I wasn't happy with all the hurdles and purchases I would have to make. If I was going to go that route I might as well stay with Microsoft and pray that they can make a reasonable phone OS.
I liked the fact that I could download everything I needed to start out for free, including Eclipse, the Android SDK and the Android plugin for Eclipse. It all pretty much worked with only a little googling to find solutions to my setup problems.
I don't know any Java but I love C#. So I was pleasantly suprised to learn how similar the two languages are.
Unfortunately, the Eclipse IDE and the Visual Studio IDE are very different and I think it just takes time and experience to become comfortable with Eclipse. Some posts on that are coming.
The phone emulator is useful but thank god we can also debug/test directly to our phones (I have a Droid 2), if not for that I don't think I could see this effort as being practical.
